When should you not do exterior painting?

Exterior painting should not be done in rain, below around 5 degrees Celsius, in high humidity, in direct hot sun on a baking surface, or in strong winds. Each of these conditions compromises the quality of the applied finish in different ways, from preventing proper adhesion to causing rapid uneven drying. This post covers each condition in detail, what happens if rain arrives shortly after painting, and how late in the year exterior work can reliably be planned.

What Conditions Make Exterior Painting Unsuitable?

Rain is the most obvious unsuitable condition, but it is not the only one. Cold temperatures slow or prevent curing, leaving the film vulnerable. High humidity, above around 85 percent, prevents water-based paints from releasing moisture and curing correctly. Strong wind causes the paint to skin over too rapidly on the surface before the underlayer has cured, and also carries dust and debris onto wet paint. Any of these conditions alone is enough to stop work.

Very hot, direct sunlight on a south-facing masonry or rendered wall can also be problematic. When the surface temperature is significantly higher than the air temperature, paint applied to it dries at the surface before the body of the film has cured, forming a brittle skin. On particularly hot sunny days, professional decorators work around the building, following the shade and avoiding direct sunlight on freshly applied paint.

Is October Too Late to Paint Outside in the UK?

Early October can still offer suitable conditions in the South of England, provided temperatures remain comfortably above 8 degrees during the day and do not drop below 5 degrees overnight in the 24 to 48 hours after application. Mid to late October becomes increasingly unreliable as temperatures drop and overnight frosts become more likely. In the North of England and Scotland, October is generally outside the reliable exterior painting season.

When in doubt, defer exterior painting to the following spring rather than risk a compromised result that may need redoing within a year. A professional decorator will be honest about this: a painter who is willing to work in marginal conditions without flagging the risk is one to be cautious about. The investment in exterior painting is worth protecting by doing it at the right time.

What Happens If It Rains 2 Hours After Painting?

The impact depends on the product used and how far curing had progressed in those two hours. Most modern water-based exterior masonry paints become rain-resistant within 1 to 2 hours in ideal conditions, but this assumes temperatures above 10 degrees and low humidity. In cooler or humid conditions, curing is slower and rain two hours after application has a higher chance of causing damage.

If rain falls on paint that has not yet cured sufficiently, the most likely outcomes are washing away of sections of the fresh paint, water marking and streaking in the finish, and in severe cases, blistering or lifting of the film as water gets beneath the surface skin. If this happens, the affected areas need to be allowed to dry fully and then assessed: some areas may be acceptable, while others will need rubbing down and repainting.

How Late in the Year Can You Paint Outside?

As a general guideline for the UK, the reliable exterior painting season runs from approximately April through to mid-October, with the best conditions in late spring and early summer. September and early October can be good months for exterior work, as temperatures are still reasonable and rainfall tends to be more predictable day-to-day than in midsummer. November through to March is generally unsuitable for most exterior painting projects.

For particularly urgent work in the colder months, specialist exterior products formulated for lower temperature application are available, with some rated down to 3 degrees Celsius. These require careful handling and are not a licence to paint in any conditions, but they do extend the practical working season slightly for experienced professionals who need to complete a project. For standard domestic projects, deferring to spring is almost always the right call.

Exterior painting is weather-dependent work, and trying to rush it in unsuitable conditions is false economy. A finish applied in the right conditions to a well-prepared surface will last for years, while one applied in marginal weather can fail within a season and need costly redoing. Plan your exterior painting for the warmer, drier months and the result will speak for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should you not do exterior painting?

In rain, below 5 degrees Celsius, in humidity above 85 percent, in high winds, or on surfaces that are very hot from direct afternoon sun. Any of these conditions compromises application quality or long-term durability.

Is October too late to paint outside?

Early October can still work in the South of England if conditions are suitable. Mid to late October is increasingly unreliable. In northern regions, the exterior painting season typically ends earlier.

When should you not paint outside in the UK?

November through to March is generally unsuitable for most exterior painting. Occasional windows may occur, but conditions are unreliable and the risk of a compromised result is too high for most projects.

What happens if it rains 2 hours after painting?

It depends on conditions during those two hours. In warm, dry conditions, most exterior masonry paints become rain-resistant within 1 to 2 hours. In cool or humid conditions, curing is slower and rain may cause streaking, washing away, or blistering of the fresh paint.

How late in the year can you paint outside?

Approximately mid-October in the South of England in favourable conditions. November onwards is generally unreliable. April through September is the recommended exterior painting season for reliable results.

Does dew affect exterior painting?

Yes. Morning dew on a surface is enough to prevent paint from adhering correctly. Professional decorators wait for surfaces to dry out after any overnight dew before starting work, typically mid-morning.

Can you paint in shade?

Yes, and for much of the day this is preferable to painting in direct hot sun. However, ensure the temperature in the shade still meets the minimum requirement. Heavily shaded walls in cool conditions may not warm up sufficiently even on a sunny day.

Should I paint over algae or lichen?

No. Algae and lichen must be treated and removed before painting. Painting over them traps moisture and the organic growth continues beneath the paint, causing rapid failure. A biocidal wash followed by thorough rinsing and drying is the correct preparation.

How long should I wait after rain before painting?

At least 24 hours for masonry surfaces after significant rainfall, and longer if the surface is porous or if cold temperatures have slowed drying. The surface must be completely dry to the touch and to a reasonable depth before applying any paint.

What is the best exterior paint for the UK climate?

Quality flexible masonry paint with a microporous formulation is ideal for UK conditions. Microporous products allow moisture vapour to escape from behind the paint film, preventing blistering and reducing the risk of moisture-related failure. Products from well-known trade brands consistently outperform budget options in longevity.

Can exterior painting be done in overcast conditions?

Yes, and overcast conditions are often ideal. Diffuse light without direct sun keeps surface temperatures moderate and consistent, allowing even application and drying across large wall areas. Check that temperature and humidity requirements are still met.

How do professionals manage weather delays?

Professional decorators monitor forecasts closely and schedule work to align with suitable windows. They build weather contingency into their project timeline and price. A decorator who commits to a fixed start and finish date for exterior work without any weather allowance is being unrealistic.

Does wind direction matter for exterior painting?

Wind from a dusty direction, particularly on dry days, can carry particles onto wet paint. Painting on the leeward side of the building when possible reduces this risk. Strong wind from any direction can affect even drying and quality of application.

Can I use interior paint outside?

No. Interior paints are not formulated to withstand UV exposure, temperature extremes, or moisture, and will fail very rapidly when used outside. Always use products specifically rated for exterior use on any exposed surface.
